Gleaning for Project Share

  • St. John Church 111 Walnut St. Boiling Springs, PA, 17007 (map)

It's Project Share gleaning time!

What is gleaning, you might ask?

Per Project Share: “Gleaning is a Biblical concept described several places in the Bible, including in the book of Ruth. It is when the growers purposely leave extras from the field behind for the poor to pick up to feed their families and those who have no way to help their families. The food is free for those laborers and is from the generosity of the Lord.

Project SHARE volunteers and clients collect excess, but still perfectly good field gleanings, drops, 2nds, market leftovers, and the last planting that is still good food, but the farmer does not pick or cannot sell it. Every tomato, apple, or ear of corn picked is going to be eaten and immensely enjoyed by someone who wouldn’t otherwise have that opportunity.”

Gleaning is Monday evenings, from 5:15-8 pm. I won’t kid you.. It’s hot sweaty (and sometimes itchy) work, but it’s a great way to give back to the community! If you’d like to give it a try, here is the link to volunteer (you’ll have to make an account first, though)

Volunteer To Glean

I plan to glean July 22, 29 and August 5. We can carpool (from Project Share or St. John) to the farm (usually out in Shippensburg) if you'd like; just let me know.

Thanks,

Jane Gillwood

If you missed the opportunity to go with the St. John folks, Project Share gleaning continues through October 26th. Fall is a great time to go to the orchards on a cool Saturday morning to help pick apples. It’s a fun activity to do with the kids as well and it’s for a good cause. You can continue to sign up at Volunteer To Glean.
